EIA estimates show a persistent gap between expected U.S. consumption of natural gas and expected U.S. production. According to EIA estimates, U.S. production will meet only 79% of U.S. consumption of natural gas in 2020. After 2020, this 21% supply gap represents over 5 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of new supply gas that is needed.
Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) — a major natural gas supply source as conventional production declines in the U.S.
- Strong projected demand growth
- Declining domestic supply
- Need for new production sources
