The Wabash Project represents the culmination of a two-decade effort, which included a $1 billion investment in research and development by The Dow Chemical Company, to produce the next generation of entrained flow gasification technology.
Global Energy purchased Wabash River Energy, Ltd., and its technology in 1999. Under its ownership Global Energy has optimized the operation of the technology. Global Energy named its gasification technology, E-Gas™ Technology.
The Wabash facility is one of only two Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) facilities in the United States according to the U.S. Department of Energy. The DOE named Wabash River Energy one of the world's cleanest coal-based power plants.
In 2005, Wabash Valley Power Association (WVPA), an electric cooperative headquartered in Indiana, and Wabash River Energy, Ltd., formed a partnership, SG Solutions LLC, to own and operate the Wabash facility.
